A substantial Zemi with two Anthropic figures. The front of the cone likely depicts Yucahu, the supreme male god of fertility, characterized by a broad mouth and deep-set eyes. A bird head symbol is engraved under each eye. On the opposite side is a figure that may represent Atabey. She was the primary goddess of fertility and was depicted with hands pushing her belly and feet up in a birthing position. The upturned legs originate from a well-defined butt. The powerful union of Yucahu and Atabey could symbolize a potent religious reference to fertility and water. Length: 10.4” Made of magnetite. Taino Culture. c. 600-1500 AD. Dominican Republic. Purchased from NY Pre-Columbian art dealer Robert Sonin, to a private NYC Collector. Curated by Larry Roberts, author of "Taino Sculptures, Art of the Gods," "Taino Hallucinogenic Implements Inhaling the Cosmic Dust," and the newly released "Taino Zemis and Other Heads of State, Rediscovering Caribbean Art." BS in Archaeology University of Florida and BA Art History University of Florida. Museum displays of Taino Art, Orlando Museum of Art (2013-2014) and Santa Fe College, (2024-Present) Gainesville, Fl.
