29th INFANTRY DIVISION PAINTED M1917 HELMET
A fine example of a World War I U.S. soldier's M1917 steel combat helmet, retaining its original green-brown sawdust-textured finish. Most notably, the front of the helmet displays the hand-painted insignia of the 29th Infantry Division, a roundel with blue and gray halves, representative of its composition of men from both sides of the Mason-Dixon line. The helmet retains its original rubberized canvas liner and brown leather chinstrap, both commonly missing. The front interior skirt is heat-stamped with the batch number ‘YJ 126'. The exterior appears to have been varnished, while the helmet shows expected scuffs, scratches and general wear overall, and the chin strap is attached to the strap bale via twisted copper wire, otherwise in very good condition. The 29th Infantry Division was first raised three months after the U.S. entry into the war, and arrived in France in June of 1918. It was thrown into the Meuse-Argonne offensive, and in its twenty-one days of combat suffered a casualty rate of thirty percent. Insignia such as that seen on this helmet were typically added immediately after the Armistice by the owner or a talented artist in his division, and were worn during victory parades held across the country as the ‘doughboys' returned home.
