A scarce late 19th to early 20th century Codd-neck soda bottle of pale aqua glass, featuring the distinctive internal glass marble closure patented by Hiram Codd. The bottle is boldly embossed with a standing rooster at center, surrounded by raised lettering reading "SELZ A. PEL..." and "VENEZIA," identifying the original Italian bottler from Venice. The bottle retains its original internal marble stopper, visible within the pinched neck chambers characteristic of the Codd patent design. This innovative closure utilized the pressure of carbonated beverages to force the glass marble against a rubber gasket, creating an effective reusable seal. The design became one of the most recognizable forms of mineral water and soda bottles during the late nineteenth century. Executed in attractive pale aqua glass with strong embossed decoration and an appealing figural rooster emblem, this example represents an excellent piece of Italian beverage history and would appeal to collectors of antique bottles, advertising, and Codd-neck marble bottles alike.

  • Provenance: Private Collection.
  • Literature: Comparable examples are illustrated in references covering Hiram Codd patent bottles, European mineral water bottles, and Italian embossed soda bottles of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
  • Circa: Late 19th to Early 20th Century, circa 1890–1915.
  • Condition: Overall good antique condition. The bottle retains its original internal marble stopper and displays expected surface wear, light scratches, scattered staining, and minor interior residue consistent with age and use. Embossing remains crisp and well-defined. No significant chips or cracks are readily apparent from the photographs, though examination under magnification is recommended for complete assessment.
