The present work is sculptor Glenna Goodacre's maquette for the monumental Irish Memorial "An Gorta Mór" ("The Great Hunger") commissioned in Philadelphia as the centerpiece of the Irish Memorial Project's commemoration of the famine's 150th anniversary. Both the public memorial and the maquette feature 35 bronze figures that tell a powerful story of starvation, emigration, and hope. The monument stretches approximately 30 feet in length, and the composition depicts three stages of the Irish experience: suffering during the famine, the perilous journey across the Atlantic, and the determination of immigrants arriving in America to begin new lives. The memorial serves as both a tribute to those who perished and a celebration of the resilience and contributions of Irish immigrants in the United States.
