IMPORTANT NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER WROUGHT BY SALLY BULLOCK
Providence, Rhode Island, Dated 1789
Central inscription "Sally Bullock In thy fair Book of life divine My God inscribe this Name" within a heart suspended from an arch framing a view of the College Edifice, the first building on the campus of Brown University, constructed in 1770. Richly detailed with figures, a squirrel and a bird in the flowering trees, a pair of wild turkeys and a dog chasing a stag. The arch's imposts and bases formed as open books, with crows on the imposts and "S.B." and "1789" on the bases. Ribbons along lower margin with a small animal and "There let it fill some humble place Beneath the slaughtered Lamb.". Lush floral vine border on sides and top, the ends tied with a bow. Row of flowering plants at lower border. Worked in silk on a linen ground, with real blonde hair on some figures. Housed in its original mahogany frame with chestnut backboard.

    Notes:
College Edifice was a popular subject in numerous samplers made at Mary Balch's School in Providence, one of the most important schools for young women in 18th Century America. The school, sometimes known as the Polly Balch School or just the Balch School, was started by Mary "Polly" Balch (1762-1831) sometime before 1785. The school began offering boarding in 1801 and by 1821 had 113 students enrolled. The Balch style of embroidery often included many of the elements you see here -- figures in elegant clothing, naturalistic floral borders, a pseudo-classical arch and a public building as a focal point. In addition to embroidery, the school's curriculum included writing, music and dancing, aided by various teachers and students from Rhode Island College (later Brown University). In her books, Betty Ring, noted girlhood textile expert, notes the Balch School "was unquestionably the best-attended private school in Providence [...] Mary was respected by her patrons and lovingly revered by her students, many of whom remarked upon her admirable qualities in later life".

Sally Bullock was the daughter of a prominent Providence family who made their fortune in shipping and the mercantile trade. Her father owned the schooner Alice, which was seized in 1793 by the French. The family also owned a considerable amount of land in Providence, including tracts on which Brown University was built. Despite this, Bullock was barred from attending the college due to her gender, but, according to family lore, she was educated by the college tutors tuition-free.

College Edifice, described by college president James Manning, was a "large, neat brick building on a most beautiful eminence commanding a most charming and variegated prospect". The building was constructed on a piece of land that had belonged to the original Brown family ancestor and co-founder of Providence, Chad Brown, and it was, at the time it was built, the largest building in Rhode Island. The name was changed to University Hall in 1823.
