Extremely Rare and Highly Desirable, Documented Alden G. Ulrich Factory Master Panel Scene Engraved Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 92 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine in .44-40 W.C.F. Formerly of the Ulrich Family Collection with Stainless Steel Barrel and Signed Affidavit Manufactured in 1926, this is an extremely scarce example of a highly optioned special order Winchester deluxe Model 92 saddle ring carbine with factory No. 4 panel scene engraving by Winchester Master Engraver Alden George Ulrich, the last of the legendary Ulrich engraving dynasty. Adding to the extremely high desirability of this particular carbine is that it is documented as having been part of the Ulrich family collection. The included 1998 dated affidavit signed by David M. Ulrich lists this carbine by serial number has having belonged to his father Leslie Borden Ulrich, who was the son of the legendary Winchester engraver John Ulrich, and that this carbine was engraved by Alden G. Ulrich specifically for Leslie. Compared to other Winchester models, the Model 92 is much more rare to see in deluxe and special ordered configurations, particularly with engraving, likely due to being commonly viewed as a utilitarian working gun. The rarity of the configuration this carbine is in is difficult to overstate, as it is quite possible it is one-of-a-kind. In "The Winchester Book" by George Madis it is estimated that out of all Winchester Model 1892 production only one out of every 900 were factory engraved, one of every 700 had a pistol grip stock, one of every 800 had checkered or carved wood, and one of every 670 had a special buttplate. Considering all of these features were significantly more rare on carbines than rifles, this particular saddle ring carbine with all of these features is an incredibly rare find. Alden George Ulrich was the last of a legendary line of Ulrich engravers, including Conrad, John, and Herman Leslie. Like other pivotal figures in the development of the "American style" of firearms engraving during the period such as Gustave Young and L.D. Nimschke, the Ulrichs also incorporated their Germanic influences and training. According to family tradition and New Haven, Connecticut directories, Leslie Borden Ulrich was also a gun engraver and wood carver/checkerer until around 1925, while Alden George engraved essentially up until his death in 1949. Given the date that Leslie Borden Ulrich appears to have stopped engraving, it is quite likely that this particular gun was built by Winchester and engraved by Alden George as a retirement or "parting ways" gift. This particular carbine exhibits the beautiful factory No. 4 pattern engraving as exhibited in the Winchester "Highly Finished Arms" catalog, with most of the patterns having been developed by John Ulrich. The engraving features a detailed scene of a hunter downing two bull elk from behind a tree on the left and a grizzly bear on a cliff on the right. Both of the scenes are surrounded by extensive floral scroll engraving and decorative borders, with further flourishes of scrollwork on the sides of the lever and on the tang of the buttplate. There are Winchester factory oval proofs on top of the barrel and receiver at the breech. The upper tang has the three-line model and trademark information. The carbine is fitted with a special ordered stainless steel barrel, an option which was first offered in 1926, the year this rifle was produced. The left of the barrel has the stainless steel marking, model marking, trademark, and caliber marking. The serial number is on the bottom of the receiver. The left side of the lower tang has the previous assembly number "241" which has been scored out by the factory and replaced with "265" flanked by punchdots, with "265" repeated on the front face of the stock wrist and inside the buttplate, where it is again flanked by punchdots. It is fitted with a pinned beaded blade front sight, a Lyman No. 6 two-leaf rear sight, a Lyman combination peep sight on the upper tang, and a saddle ring on the left of the receiver. It is mounted with a very finely figured carbine forearm and pistol grip stock, both with Winchester factory deluxe H-pattern checkering, and a crescent rifle buttplate.
