American Civil War Sixth Plate Ambrotype Portrait of Confederate Captain George Washington Kurtz of the 5th Virginia Infantry Regiment in Littlefield Parsons & Co Thermoplastic Gutta Percha Union Case, Soldier of Stonewall Brigade Under General Thomas J. Jackson, One of the Most Celebrated Fighting Formations of the American Civil War. The Regiment Served in Major Eastern Theater Campaigns Including Gettysburg in July 1863, One of the Defining and Most Heavily Fought Battles of the American Civil War. The Portrait Depicts Captain Kurtz Wearing a Gray Shell Jacket Beneath a Heavy Overcoat with Hand Gilded Brass Buttons and Period Applied Rosy Tinted Cheeks. The Image Is Preserved Behind Glass with an Ornate Stamped Gilded Brass Mat Featuring Scrolled Floral Foliate Decoration and Housed in a Thermoplastic Gutta Percha Union Case with High Relief Floral Exterior. The Interior Paper Label Identifies Littlefield Parsons & Co and References Their Patented Riveted Hinge System of 1856 and 1857. Case Approx: 3 3/4"L 3 1/4"W 1" Thick Captain George Washington Kurtz (1838–1926) Enlisted at the Outbreak of the Civil War in the 5th Virginia Infantry Regiment of the Stonewall Brigade and Rose from First Sergeant to Captain. He Was Reportedly Wounded During the Intense Fighting at Gettysburg in July 1863 and Later Captured at Spotsylvania Court House in May 1864. He Survived Imprisonment and the War, Returning to Virginia Where He Lived Until the Age of 88.
