WILLIAM H. EMORY
(1811 - 1887) Union major general, a brigade commander in the Army of the Potomac in 1862, and was transferred to the Western Theater. He later commanded a division in the Port Hudson campaign. He subsequently returned to the East as the commander of the Nineteenth Corps, serving in all the major battles in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1864, especially at the Battle of Cedar Creek. War-date A.E.S. on a letter from a C. S. Magee, 3pp. 8vo., Pittsburgh, Aug. 9, 1861, to Emory, congratulating Emory on his appointment as colonel of the U.S. 3rd Cavalry and asking after his own application for a position as a regimental sutler, all bizarrely struck through with black ink. Emory executes his endorsement on the verso, in full: ‘Washington Augst. 13 1861 I cordially endorse the recommendation of the Officers of the 3d Cavalry, to appoint Mr. C. S. Magee Sutler of the Regiment', signing ‘W H Emory' in black ink and adding his contemporary rank ‘Lt Col 3d Cav Comding Regiment'. Shows original mailing folds, very faintly toned at the top edge from Emory's endorsement, otherwise in fine overall condition. Sold with a period frontispiece engraving of Emory.
