EXTREMELY RARE AND IMPORTANT TRANSFER-DECORTED CREAMWARE PITCHER PERTAINING TO STONINGTON, CONNECTICUT
Early 19th Century
Possibly Herculaneum Pottery, Liverpool, circa 1818-1825. One side with "The Gallant Defence of Stonington August 9th, 1814" and "Stonington is free whilst her Heroes have one gun left" in banners surrounding a view of a fleet of British ships off Stonington. Other side with "United States Frigate Guerriere, Comn Macdonough, bound to Russia July 1818" below a polychrome portrait of the ship bordered at lower margin by a maritime montage of flags, a cannon, anchor, etc. "ALW" monogram within a laurel leaf and sheaf of wheat wreath under the spout.

  • Provenance:
    Brainard Family, Hartford, Connecticut.
Nathan Liverant and Son, Colchester, Connecticut.
The Collection of Nancy & Larry Dickson.

    Reference:
A similar pitcher, with the same transfer of Stonington but with a spread-wing eagle instead of the "Guerriere", is in the collection of The National Museum of American History.
  • Dimensions: Height 9.25".
  • Condition: Fine condition overall. Very minor losses to black transferred highlights and some loss to the green in the water. Very minor roughage to the rim. Small stain to interior. UV light does not reveal any repairs or repaint.

The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects. All items may have normal signs of age and wear commensurate with their age; these issues will likely not be mentioned in the condition report. Please contact Eldred's before the auction with any condition questions. Questions about condition will not be answered after purchase. Condition reports are provided as a courtesy, and we are not responsible for any errors or omissions. Important note on frames: Frames are not guaranteed to be in the same condition as they are in the item photograph. Due to handling and shipping, many frames, especially antique ones, are prone to losses. If you have questions about the condition of a frame, please contact us prior to the auction.
