[Civil War]. A group of photographs of Civil War soldiers and officers, some identified.

17 items, the majority being Civil War-era photographs of officers and soldiers representing the Union Army and Navy. Conditions overall good, with occasional soiling, toning, and edge and corner wear to mounts. Highlights include:

3 images housed together in modern folder compiled by the consignor, indicating that they relate to Lt. Clark Stevens, who served with the 2nd New Hampshire Infantry and 1st New Hampshire Heavy Artillery. Included in the group is a CDV of an unidentified officer, uncredited. Modern tag furnished by consignor suggests that the subject may be Lieutenant Stevens, although we are not confident in this identification. Also enclosed is a CDV of an engraving of Joseph Hooker, identified in period ink in lower margin, and a 7 1/2 x 9 1/8 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount showing an unidentified group of soldiers posed with their weapons. The image is accompanied by a modern tag furnished by the consignor indicating that the photograph depicts Co. I, 1st New Hampshire Heavy Artillery, including Lt. Stevens at far left, ca 1864-1865, but no further documentation accompanies the image making the consignor's identification difficult to confirm (heavy toning, soiling, edge and corner loss to print and mount).

8 x 5 3/4 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount of an unidentified member of the 11th New York State Militia. Uncredited. -- 7 1/2 x 5 3/8 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount, showing a group of eight soldiers, possibly from Pennsylvania. Uncredited. -- 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 in. hand-painted crayon portrait of two soldiers, mounted and framed, with modern tag furnished by consignor suggesting that the men may be New Hampshire sharpshooters, but this cannot be confirmed. Uncredited (toning and soiling to print and mount, not examined outside frame). -- 5 1/4 x 4 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount of a "US Navy Drum Major, Annapolis, 1865," as per modern penciled notation on verso. Uncredited. -- 6 x 4 3/4 in. photograph on cardstock mount, possibly a salt print, showing Captain Lewis Warrington. Uncredited (some fading to print, soiling to print and mount). -- 9 1/2 x 8 in. enlarged portrait of John Winslow, Commander of the USS Kearsarge. Uncredited, but possibly made ca late 19th century. -- 6 x 8 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount of a group of four men, including gentleman in uniform at left, possibly a naval officer. Uncredited (toning to print and mount, loss to lower left corner of mount). -- 7 1/2 x 3 3/4 in. photograph on cardstock mount of Willis B. Day, Engineer, US Navy. Mansfield, OH: Potter. -- 5 3/4 x 7 7/8 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount of a large group of people lining a street, many in uniform, including a band, possibly for a military funeral procession. Chester, PA: Amos & Bordine (verso imprint) (toning, some soiling to print and mount, edge and corner wear including some loss to mount). -- 5 5/8 x 6 in. photograph on cardstock mount (heavily trimmed) showing a group of young boys dressed in Zouave-style uniforms. Elizabeth, NJ: John Hall (verso imprint) (print and mount trimmed, toning, soiling). -- 10 x 8 in. photographic enlargement of an African American sailor, ca late 19th century or after. Uncredited (toning, soiling, edge and corner wear including some chipping and loss).

[Also with:] Reports of the Committee on the Conduct of the War / Fort Pillow Massacre / Returned Prisoners, regarding the mass murder by CSA troops under General Forrest. Reports dated May 6 and May 9, 1864 (covers heavily worn, interior pages overall good with light toning to margins). -- Roll of Students of Harvard University Who Served in the Army or Navy of the United States During the War of the Rebellion. Cambridge: Welch, Bigelow, and Company, 1866 (paper wrappers worn, with spine repaired with tape). -- Partially printed appointment issued by the National Guard of Pennsylvania to Robert Stewart, Jr., 1st PA Infantry Regiment, 27 March 1899. 13 x 17 in. (toning to margins).
