SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA ATTRIBUTED WALNUT LAZY-SUSAN DINING TABLE, three-piece form (top and platform remove separately from the base), the round top with a central rotating lazy-Susan platform over a plain apron, the whole raised on turned legs. Retains its original surface with outstanding patina. Circa 1930. 30" H top, 61 1/2" D.
Catalogue Note: This Colonial Revival period table was likely a special-order item. Possibly made at Virginia Craftsman in Harrisonburg or the Shenandoah Community Workers, Bird Haven, Shenandoah Co. Both firms were producing this type of furniture based on earlier "Colonial" styles.
The Shenandoah Community Workers were founded in the early 1920s by William Bernard Clark. The organization was started, in part, to provide paid work to the economically disadvantaged local community. Near Basye, VA, at the base of the Allegheny Mountains, the Clark family named this area Bird Haven. Their production began primarily with puzzles, toys, and games for children, but they expanded production to include furniture, hooked rugs, metal objects, and many other domestic articles. Many of their products were sold through mail-order brochures, and at some point, a post office branch was established on the grounds to accommodate the volume of products being mailed out. A retail shop in the community also existed, and it's thought that many of the larger pieces of furniture were sold there. Research into the operation of Bird Haven and the pieces produced there is ongoing.

  • Provenance:

    From a Virginia private collection.

  • Condition:

Very good overall condition with typical minor wear; the surface somewhat crackled to the top; the top with some expected minor shrinkage separation between the boards and minor to moderate warping.
