(NUREMBERG TRIALS) FRANCIS BIDDLE
(1886 - 1968) American lawyer and judge, Attorney General during World War II who served as the primary American judge during the postwar Nuremberg trials. Good content T.L.S. on his personal letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Washington, Apr. 20, 1953. In part: 'Thank you for writing me about my letter to the Attorney General with respect to Senator Joseph McCarthy. The [Drew Pearson] libel suit is still pending, but I understand it will be tried before long...' Staple at top left corner else fine. Biddle was a prominent public critic of McCarthy and McCarthyism during the 1950s. As national chairman of the Americans for Democratic Action (ADA), Biddle actively denounced McCarthy's tactics and urged federal investigations into his controversial methods. Biddle's former Assistant Attorney General, Norman Littell, successfully sued columnist Drew Pearson in 1953 for false statements regarding the Dutch government, ultimately winning $50,001.
