An elegant Chinese hardwood armchair executed in the timeless Ming-inspired taste, featuring a gracefully curved horseshoe-form crest rail, shaped arms, and a broad central back splat carved with the traditional "Shou" longevity medallion. The clean architectural lines and restrained ornamentation exemplify the refined aesthetic associated with classical Chinese furniture, where balanced proportions and exceptional joinery take precedence over excessive decoration. Constructed of richly figured hardwood with a warm medium-brown finish, the chair displays gently rounded arm supports, square-section legs joined by molded aprons, and traditional inward-curved feet. The carved longevity symbol, one of the most recognizable motifs in Chinese decorative arts, represents wishes for long life, prosperity, and good fortune, making pieces of this style especially desirable for both collectors and interior designers. The generously upholstered loose seat cushion is covered in an attractive floral textile that complements the warmth of the wood while providing modern comfort. Equally suited for use as a desk chair, occasional chair, hall chair, or accent piece, this example blends traditional Chinese craftsmanship with timeless decorative appeal. Inspired by furniture forms developed during the Ming dynasty (1368–1644), such chairs have remained highly sought after throughout the twentieth century for their elegant simplicity, sophisticated joinery, and enduring versatility. A handsome decorative furnishing suitable for both traditional and contemporary interiors.

  • Literature: The chair draws inspiration from classical Ming dynasty furniture, particularly horseshoe-back armchairs (Quanyi), forms celebrated for their elegant proportions and sophisticated mortise-and-tenon construction. The carved "Shou" longevity medallion is a traditional Chinese auspicious motif symbolizing long life and prosperity and has appeared in furniture, ceramics, textiles, and architectural ornamentation for centuries.
  • Circa: Late 20th Century, circa 1970s–1990s.
  • Condition: Overall very good vintage condition. Structurally sound and sturdy with light surface wear, scattered scuffs, minor finish loss, and expected signs of age and use. Upholstered loose seat cushion is clean and presents well with light wear consistent with age. Ready for immediate use.
