EXTREMELY RARE HERMAN BOYE (DANISH / AMERICAN, 1792-1830) VIRGINIA NINE-SHEET MAP, the center original section being a hand-colored engraving on paper mounted on linen, the flanking sections in facsimile, titled Map of the State of VIRGINIA. Constructed in conformity to LAW from the late SURVEYS authorized by the Legislature and other original and authentic Documents, by Herman Boye. ENGRAVED BY H.S. TANNER. Title, Writn. & Engrd. by Jos. Perkins. Philadelphia: Henry S. Tanner, 1826/1827. Featuring a vignette depicting the state seal flanked by images of Natural Bridge and Harper's Ferry within the title, and retaining its original green silk edging at the top and the bottom. The facsimile sections feature large views of the University of Virginia and Richmond from the west at the tops. Each conservation framed in matching antique-style veneered wood frames by the Prince George Art & Frame Shop. Center section 1825/1826, flanking sections modern. 62 1/4" x 31 1/2" sight, 66 1/4" x 35 1/2" OA.
Catalogue Note: Of the 400 copies printed of this nine-sheet map, less than a dozen survive. We could locate no auction records for this map. Complete copies are held in the collections of the Library of Virginia and the Library of Congress. In 1827, a smaller four-sheet version of the map was printed in a quantity of 800. It is also extremely rare, with copies coming to market sporadically and selling in the $20,000-$30,000 range.

    Fine condition with some minor conservation. The lower section of one frame is partially detached.
