ENGLISH CARVED LIMESTONE TALL STADDLE STONE, two-piece mushroom style form, the tall tapered base piece supports a rounded upper piece with a flat bottom. 19th century, possibly earlier. 41" HOA, 22" D.
Catalogue Note: Staddle stones were used in series to support grain buildings in Europe for centuries. They were designed so that mice and other varmints couldn't crawl into the building. Basically, the animal could scale the base of the stone but couldn't make it out across the flat underside of the mushroom-like top.

  • Provenance:

The estate collection of Patsy Martin, Chambersburg, PA.

  • Condition:

Good overall condition, the whole with typical minor to moderate surface wear; the top with a loss to the edge, the base with scattered losses, some possibly as-made/naturally occurring.

Accepted Forms of Payment:

ACH, MasterCard, Money Order / Cashiers Check, Visa, Wire Transfer
