Portrait of Jean Pierre Boyer President D'Haiti after Gilbert Barincou

Unframed lithographed portrait. A finely detailed early 19th-century lithograph by Gilbert Barincou depicting Jean-Pierre Boyer in left-facing profile, rendered in an oval vignette format and showing the Haitian president in full military dress with ornate epaulettes, decorative collar, and sash.

  • Provenance: ARTIST PROFILE: Gilbert Barincou (also known as Barincou aîné, meaning "Barincou the Elder," to distinguish him from his son, Barincou fils) was a French painter associated with Bordeaux who became one of the earliest European artists to document the newly independent nation of Haiti in the early 19th century. Around 1820, at the invitation of President Alexandre Pétion, the French artist known as Barincourt (Barincou) founded a school of art in Port-au-Prince, making the Barincou family foundational figures in Haitian artistic and cultural history. Barincou fils — his son — continued this legacy as a French artist who worked in Haiti during the first half of the nineteenth century, producing works explicitly commissioned by Haitian authorities, including at least one work made for the Haitian Senate. The elder Barincou is best known in the auction market for his circa 1821 lithographic portrait of Jean-Pierre Boyer, Haiti's "reunifier," who took power in 1821 following a long period of division and bloodshed. This portrait, described as rare, reflects the artist's close ties to Haiti's ruling class and his role in shaping the visual and national identity of the young republic.
