BROTHERTOWN INDIAN AGENTS SELL LAND TO ...AN INDIAN
Fascinating Indian-related document, 1p. folio, Oneida, NY, 1832, in which Joseph Stebbins, Samuel Comstock and Samuel Hubbard, 'Superintendents of the Brothertown Indians' and acting under powers granted them by a state law concerning 'an act to authorize the Brothertown Indians to dispose of their lands in this state', arrange for Indian Alla Mossuck[?] to sell 6.25 acres of his land to fellow Indian Fanny Tkuswick[?] for the sum of $112.50. Signed only by the commissioners at bottom. Edge wear, folds, and some negligible wear at fold junctions else very good. One now-recognized motivation for the state law was to have the Indian lands legally sold and thus subject to property taxes so that when the new owner became unable to pay, the lands could be sold to new (white) owners for a pittance. The Brothertown Indians a unique, historically Christian Native American tribe formed in the late 1700s by the merging of several Algonquian tribes from southern New England and Long Island. As settlers continued to push them off their New York lands, the Brothertown moved west in the 1830s, eventually settling near Green Bay and Lake Winnebago in the Michigan Territory (now Wisconsin). In Wisconsin, they established thriving communities with mills, boat-building operations, and settled farms.
