General Leclerc, leader of French expeditionary forces in St. Domingue

Hand-colored engraving of General Charles Victor Emmanuel Leclerc, Napoleon Bonaparte's brother-in-law, who led the French expedition to Saint-Domingue in 1801–1802. He is mounted on a chestnut horse with ornate spotted decorative saddlecloth trimmed in gold fringe. The general is shown in full military dress: a dark blue coat with gold epaulettes, white breeches, and a tall bicorne hat adorned with a tricolor cockade and red and white feathered plume.
