Eastern Mediterranean, Levant, Holyland, ca. 700 BCE – 100 CE. A broad, shallow earthenware bowl raised on a low disk foot, its gently rising walls flaring to a thickened rim flanked by a pair of looped horizontal handles. Worked from buff to pinkish clay, the surface carries the soft chalky bloom and earthen incrustation of long burial, with mineral staining mottling the interior basin. The generous span and opposed handles suited it to communal serving or food preparation, an object made for the hand and the table rather than display. Its unembellished profile speaks to a utilitarian tradition reaching across the ancient Levant, where such open vessels were thrown in quantity for daily domestic use. The form is timeless in its economy: a vessel whose purpose, the holding and passing of food, is legible in every line. Size: 19.9" W x 5.1" H x 16.6" D (50.5 cm W x 13.0 cm H x 42.2 cm D).
