Highly Desirable Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Saddle Ring Trapper's Carbine in .44-40 W.C.F. with Documented 14 Inch Barrel, Madis Letter, ATF Exemption Letter, and Factory Letter Manufactured in 1906, this is a highly desirable example of a Winchester Model 1892 Trapper's carbine with a 14 inch barrel. The included factory letter lists the carbine in .44 caliber with a 14 inch barrel when received at the warehouse on 25 February 1906 and shipped on 22 March 1906. These Trapper's carbines found significant popularity in the American West well into the 20th century among those desiring firepower in a compact package, including ranchers, farmers, homesteaders, and trappers, hence its name. These carbines often saw many years of hard use as a working gun in harsh environments, leaving any surviving examples highly sought after among collectors today. This particular example has Winchester factory oval proofs on top of the barrel and receiver at the breech. The top of the barrel has the two-line address and patent dates, as well as the caliber marking at the breech. The upper tang has the three-line model and trademark, while the serial number is marked on the bottom of the receiver (first digit obfuscated). It is fitted with a pinned blade front sight, folding ladder rear sight, and a saddle ring on the left of the receiver. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate. Includes a George Madis letter which notes that the first digit of the serial number was determined to be "3" by the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. The included ATF letter lists this carbine as exempted from the provisions of the National Firearms Act.
