ANTIQUARIAN COLONIAL VIRGINIA GOVERNMENT VOLUME, John Mercer (1704-1768), An Exact Abridgment of all the Public Acts of Assembly, of Virginia, in Force and Use. Together with Sundry Precedents, adapted thereto, and Proper Tables, Williamsburg: William Parks, 1737. First edition. Later full-leather binding with spine labels.
Literature: Berg Williamsburg Imprints 23; Evans 4204.
Catalogue Note: The first digest of the laws of Virginia to be published, it was intended as a compendium for ready reference, with a detailed section of precedents. Mercer's well-indexed abridgment of the laws was issued by the first printer permanently established in Williamsburg. Parks, who previously had printed at Annapolis, continued to operate that shop as a satellite press and won lucrative appointments as the official printer to both colonies. Parks also published the Virginia Gazette from 1736 to his death in 1750. All Parks's imprints seem to have been published in small numbers and are rarely encountered. Only a handful of copies have been sold at auction since 1975.
