THOMAS FAIRFAX (1693-1781) SIGNED 1779 SHENANDOAH CO., VIRGINIA LAND GRANT DOCUMENT, manuscript on paper, granting 200 acres of land in Shenandoah Co., Virginia to William Taylor. Signed by Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord of Fairfax of Cameron. Professionally matted. Dated October 13, 1779. 15 3/4" x 12 3/4" object, 22" x 28" OA.
Catalogue Note: (1) Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord of Fairfax of Cameron, owned the Northern Neck Proprietary, which had been granted to his ancestor John Colepeper in 1649 and ended in 1781 upon Thomas's death. In a proprietary colony, individuals or companies were granted commercial charters by the crown; these proprietors were then granted authority to select governors and other officials in that colony. (2) A digital copy of the land grant can be found at the Library of Virginia, Virginia State Land Office online database.

    From the Richard and Catherine Hubbard collection, Cape Charles/Williamsburg, VA.

  • Condition:

    Paper is in poor but stable condition, with four separate sections and losses around each fold and two areas on the right side; the ink is very legible, and signature is large and visible in lower left corner.
