Attractive Finely Engraved and Gold Inlaid C.D. Tanner Percussion Double Barrel Shotgun from the Kings of Hanover Gewehrkammer This distinctive shotgun is a product of Carl Daniel Tanner (1791-1858) who served as the Hanoverian hofrustmeister (court armorer) in 1829-1845. This shotgun is identified from the gewehrkammer (gun room) of the Kings of Hanover at Blankenburg before being moved to Schloss Marienburg in 1945. The browned, Damascus barrels are inlaid with two gold bands at the breech end and have a concave rib fitted with a bead front sight. The barrels and are rib signed “C.D. TANNER./KONIGL-HOF-RUSTMEISTER/IN HANNOVER.” The underside of the right barrel has "682" and "39." "39" is also repeated inside the forend, on the back of the locks, and on the buttplate. The locks have sunken "TANNER/HANNOVER" maker's marks, remnants of removed safeties/hammer stalls, bestial designs on the strikers, scroll and floral patterns with animal masks, and game birds. The ramrod entry pipe and trigger plate finials are pineapple designs. The trigger guard bow has a scene with a pair of dogs and birds, and a reposed dog is on the heel. The wrist escutcheon has the crest of a blood royal. Sling swivels are fitted to the middle ramrod pipe and trigger plate. The stock has a checkered wrist, shadowline cheekpiece, and 14 inch length of pull.
