PAIR OF SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TEETH ATTRIBUTED TO "CERES" ARTISAN WILLIAM A. GILPIN
19th Century
Formatted in the traditional manner of the Ceres artisans, with figural scenes framed within a geometric border topped with a proscenium arch containing smaller images. One tooth depicts a woman in an elaborate striped and floral dress standing on stage next to a harp and a sheet music stand. Arch with image of a woman, probably the allegorical figure of Hope, standing beside an anchor. Other tooth depicts a uniformed man wearing a tricorne, possibly Napoleon, standing beside his horse in a landscape. Arch with a spread-wing eagle with an "E Pluribus Unum" banner, a polychrome Liberty shield, arrows and olive branches. Decorative borders encircle base of both teeth.

  • Provenance: A Third Dictionary of Scrimshaw Artists by Stuart M. Frank (Mystic, Ct.: Stuart M. Frank and Mystic Seaport Museum, 2013), p. 121-124, William A. Gilpin, born in 1805, came from a prominent Wilmington, Delaware family. He is known to have made at least two whaling voyages, including an 1834-1837 voyage aboard the whaleship Ceres. Aboard this voyage were three other scrimshanders who produced work in a very similar style, so they collectively are known as the Ceres Artisans.
  • Dimensions: Lengths approx. 5.25".
