A charming pair of Victorian cranberry opaline glass lustres, each raised on a circular spreading foot supporting a baluster-form stem and broad scalloped rim. The richly colored glass is finely embellished with hand-painted gilt foliate ornament, white enamel blossoms, cobalt blue enamel dots, and jewel-tone accents in a repeating floral and geometric pattern. Each lustre retains a complement of suspended faceted crystal prisms and teardrop pendants, creating a lively play of light characteristic of these decorative Victorian objects. The softly scalloped rims are highlighted with gilt edging, while the vivid pink opaline glass provides a striking contrast to the sparkling crystal drops. Originally intended as decorative mantel ornaments, lustres such as these became highly fashionable during the Victorian period, admired for their brilliant reflective qualities and colorful embellishment. Equally effective displayed on a mantel, console, or centerpiece, this attractive pair exemplifies the romantic decorative arts of the late nineteenth century. Offered as a matched pair.

  • Provenance: Private Collection.
  • Literature: Comparable Victorian opaline glass lustres are illustrated in standard references on nineteenth-century English decorative glass, including works by Charles Hajdamach and other studies of Victorian art glass.
  • Circa: Late 19th Century, circa 1880–1900.
  • Condition: Overall very good antique condition. Both lustres retain their original cranberry opaline coloration with expected age-related wear to the gilt decoration and enamel ornamentation, including scattered rubbing and minor losses. The crystal prism drops appear largely intact and period, with light edge wear, occasional flea bites, and minor surface abrasions consistent with age and handling. One or more prisms may have been replaced over time. No significant cracks observed; each displays well.
