This collection of six ceramic vessels is comprised of five character jugs and one miniature teapot, predominantly of English origin. The pieces are constructed from glazed earthenware, featuring hand-painted polychrome enamel decoration. The largest piece is a seated Toby jug titled The Winker by Burlington Ware, depicting a man winking in a black tricorn hat, orange coat, and green breeches. The base is marked with a black printed backstamp reading Burlington WARE MADE IN ENGLAND within a rectangular frame, alongside the hand-painted script title The Winker. An Artone miniature character teapot is formed as a man's head with a blue handle and spout, featuring a removable lid in the shape of a turquoise top hat. The base bears a circular black backstamp reading ARTONE ENGLAND HAND PAINTED. A second Artone piece is a small character jug depicting a masked highwayman in a blue coat holding a pistol and a gold bag, marked on the base with a small green printed stamp reading ARTONE ENGLAND. The collection includes a small seated Toby jug on a square base by Wood and Son, showing a man in a green coat and yellow breeches holding a foaming mug. The base is marked with a black printed stamp reading TOBY by WOOD and SON ENGLAND with a lion passant logo and an incised No 3. A diminutive standing character jug features a figure in a blue coat and yellow breeches on a green base, stamped in black on the underside with the word JAPAN. The final piece is a small seated Toby jug finished in a monochromatic honey-brown glaze, featuring an impressed shape on the partially glazed base without a visible manufacturer name.
