9th New York Volunteer Infantry U.S. Springfield Trapdoor Model 1888 Round Rod Bayonet .45-70 Gov't Rifle. Markings: The rear of the breech is marked “525485”. The top of the action is marked “U.S Model 1884”. The lock plate is marked with a federal eagle and “U.S. Springfield”. The left side of the barrel is marked “VP P” with eagle head proof and "A". The barrel bands are marked on the right side with a “U”. There is a strong "SWP 1891" cartouche on the left stock flat on the left side. The elegant script SWP belongs to Samuel W. Porter, who was the Master Armorer and Chief Inspector of Springfield Armory from 15 September 1879 to 18 June 1894. There is a faint stylized "P" with in a circle on the stock just behind the lower tang. Sights: The front sight is a blade pinned to a rectangular base set on the barrel. The rear sight is a Buffington ladder sight that was used on the M1884 rifles. There is a “U” notch sight fixed to the rear of the ladder for use as a battle sight when the ladder is folded down. The base of the sight is adjustable for windage. The right side of the ladder is marked from “2-14”, with a hash line every 100 yards. The top right corner of the ladder is marked “R”. The left side of the ladder is marked “15-20” with a hash line every 50 yards. There are four different sights for use when the ladder is raised: there is a small peep sight at the bottom of the slider for use as a battle sight, a “U” notch in the base of a triangle for use from 200-1400 yards, a peep near the top of the slider for use at 1400 yards, and a “U” notch at the very top of the slider for use from 1500-2000. Stock Configuration: The stunning tiger wood stock features a 1888 rod bayonet assembly, barrel band with sling/stacking loops, barrel band, two through bolts and lock plate, straight wrist, straight comb, and semi-crescent buttplate with storage gate. The Springfield Model 1888 was a trapdoor breechblock service rifle produced by the Springfield Armory for the United States military. Introduced in 1888, it was the final design in a long line of such weapons using a design developed by Erskine S. Allin in the 1860s, and the last single-shot rifle to see American military service. Despite the replacement of the trapdoor rifles by the adoption of newer repeating rifles, they were manufactured until 1893 and saw combat during the Spanish–American War, a combat that was dominated by the newer Springfield Krag–Jørgensen bolt action rifle. The Model 1888, despite its aged technology, was built in large numbers and was also the most advanced and efficient of all the Springfield trapdoor rifles, and for this reason remains popular among military enthusiasts. The regiment was entirely staffed by men from New York City and was actively called upon by the State of New York to deal with instances of unrest. Elements of the 9th Regiment was called to service during the abolition riots of 1835, the great fire in New York City of 1845, the Orange riot of 1871 and the three railroad riots of 1877, 1892, and 1895 at Albany, Buffalo, and Brooklyn respectively. During the Civil War the 9th Regiment fought as both the 9th New York Militia and the 83rd New York Volunteers. It was attached to the Army of the Potomac and participated in dozens of actions from 1861 to 1864 including the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, and Cold Harbor to name some of the more famous engagements. On May 3rd, 1898 the regiment was reorganized as a twelve-company unit and officially mustered into federal service as the “9th Regiment Infantry, New York Vols.” The 9th Regiment was mustered in at Camp Townsend, NY and departed on the 24th of May after several weeks of drill, bound for Camp George H. Thomas at Chickamauga Park in Georgia. The regiment arrived on the 26th of May and by the 29th was officially attached to the First Brigade, of the Second Division, of the Third Army Corp., where it was brigaded with the 1st Arkansas and the 2nd Kentucky.
