Taino. A fully dimensional Head Cemi with a relief carved bird-man resting on top of the head. The feet drape from the wing tips to rest over the heads eyes. The wings are embossed bird heads. Large ear ornaments brace the cabaza. The face is fully engraved. The chin has a zoomorphic face carved in linear patterns. The eyes and mouth have been pecked to leave a facial contrast. Made of marble. Length: 8” Taino Culture. c. 600-1500AD. Hispaniola. Acquired at a local auction. Curated by Larry Roberts, author of "Taino Sculptures, Art of the Gods," "Taino Hallucinogenic Implements Inhaling the Cosmic Dust," and the newly released "Taino Zemis and Other Heads of State, Rediscovering Caribbean Art."
