BLACK 367TH INFANTRY 'BUFFALOES' COMPANY PHOTOGRAPH
Rare original photograph of 'Headquarters Company 367th Infantry N.A. Camp Upton L.I. May 1918'. The approx. 45.75 x 10 in. group photograph shows the members of the company in five rows, all in uniform, with only two white officers shown at center as most of the regiment's junior officers were black as well. Barracks appear in the background with a few men observing the proceedings. In three or four places, largely at the margins, bits of the photo have adhered to the frame's glass, but only in one tiny spot does this materially affect the image. Marginal soiling and a damp stain at right margin, still overall very good and set in the original frame. The 367th Infantry Regiment was organized during World War I as part of the 92nd Division. The regiment was formed at Camp Upton in New York in 1917. On 10 November 1918, elements of the regiment helped suppress German machine-gun positions while supporting adjacent French units during attacks near Bois Frehaut. French commanders later cited the battalion and supporting machine gun units for their actions. The regiment's 1st Battalion received the French Croix de Guerre for its actions during the fighting near Bois Frehaut in the closing days of the war.
