Lillian Genth (American, 1876–1953) Oil On Canvas Landscape Painting
Early 20th Cent., American
Lillian Mathilde Genth (1876–1953) was a highly successful American Impressionist painter. She remains a fascinating figure in American art history because her subject matter shifted dramatically midway through her career. Genth is most famous for painting female nudes in sun-dappled, outdoor forest settings. She studied in Paris under the legendary artist James McNeill Whistler. Around 1928, she famously swore off painting nudes forever. For the rest of her life, she traveled to Spain, North Africa, and Asia (including Bali, Japan, and Thailand) to paint portraits, local architecture, and travel scenery; she was even commissioned to paint a portrait of the King of Thailand. Her works are held in the permanent collections of major institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. This specific piece is stenciled on the back: 'From the Estate of Lillian Genth' and is presented in a modern gilded, wooden frame.
