Taino. Sacred planting fid or dibble? with a 3-dimensional bird man as a symbol for the casique (shaman/priest). A prominent bird head denotes transformation from a human to a bird. The dominant theme for Taino bird-men is long legs extending from the bottom of the wings. There is an additional human element with arms running from the shoulders and hands resting on the belly. Each wing has an engraved bird head. The entire form is engraved with icons. Just under the feet is a band of composite bird heads. Birds were considered allies of the chief who was the chosen spiritual mediator. Under the influence of cohoba, and the bird-man guise, the casique could traverse the supernatural cosmos and communicate with ancestors and deities. Made of magnetite. Length 8.5”. Taino Culture c. 600-1500AD. From Hispaniola. Acquired from Pre-Columbian dealer Ben Waller, Ocala, Fl. Curated by Larry Roberts, author of "Taino Sculptures, Art of the Gods," "Taino Hallucinogenic Implements Inhaling the Cosmic Dust," and the newly released "Taino Zemis and Other Heads of State, Rediscovering Caribbean Art." BS in Archaeology University of Florida and BA Art History University of Florida. Museum displays of Taino Art, Orlando Museum of Art (2013-2014) and Santa Fe College, (2024-Present) Gainesville, Fl.
