Chavin Culture Painted Cotton Textile, Karwar, South Coast, c. 1200 BCE. Size: 25.5'' x 25.5'', 65 x 65 cm (textile); 30'' x 30'', 76 x 76 cm (mount). Cotton and pigment. Cloth making began in the Andes as early as the third millennium BC and remained a medium of artistic expression and carrier of important social, political, and religious information, preceding ceramics. In the case of this textile, it has been painted, providing a portable or wearable surface for the depiction of complex imagery. Textiles are thought to have facilitated the spread of Chavin imagery from the north, where it originated, to the southern Peruvian coast, where this fragment is said to have been found. The motifs and painting style closely resemble the stone carvings at the site of Chavin de Huantar. The figures clawed hands and feet, serpent hair and belt relate it to the staff god, one of the main deities worshipped at Chavin de Huantar.
