This late 19th-century earthenware ceramic tile was manufactured by Josiah Wedgwood and Sons at Etruria, England. The tile is part of the manufacturer's Shakespeare Series and depicts the character Hermia from William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, a design attributed to artist Helen Jane Arundel Miles. The central scene features an auburn-haired figure in a violet classical gown kneeling in a forest and gesturing toward a tree trunk. The decoration is achieved through a dark brown transfer-printed outline with hand-applied colors under a clear glaze. The name HERMIA appears in the lower-left corner within a boxed frame. The reverse of the tile is embossed with a grid mark identifying the maker as JOSIAH WEDGWOOD & SONS ETRURIA. The item includes a Rubin Collection sticker on the reverse of the frame. The tile is secured in an Aesthetic-style wooden frame featuring a distressed gilt finish with blue and red painted details. Dimensions: 7.00"L x 7.00"W x 1.00"H
