This is a large-format copperplate engraving on wove paper engraved by William Sharp (British, 1749¢â‚¬"1824) after Benjamin West (American/British, 1738¢â‚¬"1820) for the celebrated Boydell Shakespeare Gallery project. The scene depicts King Lear, the Fool, Edgar (as Poor Tom), and other figures taking shelter during the storm, illustrating a dramatic moment from Shakespeare's tragedy. The style reflects the transition between Neoclassicism and Romanticism prevalent in the late 18th century. Inscribed below the image 'Painted by B. West Esq. R. A.' lower left, and 'Engrav'd by W. Sharp.' lower right. Central inscription reads 'SHAKSPEARE. King Lear. ACT III. SCENE IV.' and 'Publish'd March 22. 1792. by JOHN & JOSIAH BOYDELL. at the Shakspeare Gallery Pall Mall. & N‚°90. Cheapside London.
