This 19th-century Ceylonese hexagonal porcupine quill and ebony box is an example of British Colonial era craftsmanship from the port city of Galle, Sri Lanka. The exterior is constructed with vertical porcupine quill panels set within a dark ebony wood frame. The frame is decorated with numerous circular bone or ivory dot inlays along the lid and body. The lid features a central brass swing handle and the front panel contains a brass keyhole escutcheon. The interior of the box is lined in a polished reddish-brown wood. The underside of the lid is lined with dark blue velvet and features a central inlaid bone medallion depicting an elephant. Below the elephant is a rectangular plaque with blue characters that spell out GALLE.
