FINE BRITISH NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER
First Quarter of the 19th Century
Wrought by Ann Waller circa 1817. Images of peafowl, a hawk, an eagle, a cat and a dog interspersed with smaller butterflies, hearts, doves, angels, plants, etc. surround verse "The sun that walks his airy way, To light the world and give the day. The moon that shines with borrow'd light, The stars that gild the gloomy night. The seas that roll unnumber'd waves, The wood that spreads its shady leaves, The field whose ears conceal the grain, The yellow treasure of the plain, All speak their maker as they can; Although they want the tongue of man.", from "Hymn to Contentment" by Anglo-Irish poet and archdeacon Thomas Parnell (1679-1718). Below verse floral wreaths contain "Ann Waller her work" and "Aged 10 years 1817". Pastoral scene in lower portion with buildings, a shepherdess and her flock of sheep, goats, geese and other animals. Stylized vine border.
