Olmec regions, North central Guerrero, middle Preclassic, ca. 550 BCE. Fine natural buff color pottery standing menstruating female figure, and depicted with a fancy hairdo, parted in the middle, and a very long tail down the center of her back and another down her right arm. Beautifully sculpted expressive facial features, parted lips with teeth exposed. Very naturalistic musculature, hands held to her sides, and legs slightly bent at the knees. Wearing a belted loincloth tied in the front center, necklace and ear ornaments highlighted in pink-orange pigment, A long blood trail on the back of her left leg highlighted in red-orange pigment. This is a symbol of a youthful woman entering into fertility. Custom metal base. Size: 8.375”H x 2.88”W (21.3 x 7.3cm).

Provenance: TL tested. Private Southwest collection. Ex. Federico Bermudez collection, acquired over 50 years ago.

  • Condition: Excellent ancient surface patina with overall scattered root marks and surface deposits. Head and both arms reattached with restoration over the break lines, and a repaired break across her waist.
