Westley Richards & Co. 20 Gauge "The Fauneta" "Special Quality" Boxlock Shot & Ball Gun with Case Completed between 1912 and 1922 according to Westley Richards' published data. The gun was built for a C. J. Van Jaarsveldt who served with the 2nd Battalion of the Kings African Rifles during the Second World War in the fierce fighting of the Pacific and was awarded the Military Cross for his service in Burma. Van Jaarsveldt returned to Nyasaland as a captain and went on to join the family business with the Citrona Soap Company and later Unilever. The rifle has black steel dovetail lump barrels with a beaded blade fore sight and a five folding leaf rear sight graduated from 100-300 yards on the rear quarter rib, rifled chokes, and chambers marked 2 3/4 inches with a single extractor. The barrels are marked with "WESTLEY RICHARDS & Co." and "LONDON" on the right and left tubes with the addition of "The Fauneta" on the left, period London proof marks along with 2003 dated London reproofs, an import mark on the under rib, and light engraving at the breech. The barrels are fitted to the boxlock action which displays "WESTLEY RICHARDS & Co." signatures on either side with light border engraving and features double triggers and a tang mounted automatic safety with gold inlaid "SAFE" indicator. Guns of this grade with no engraving are known as "Special Quality" guns. The gun is fitted with a nicely figured and mullered border multi-point checkered splinter forend with blued iron and Deeley latch release and horn tip inlay as well as a straight grip stock with blank stock oval and a leather covered recoil pad. Includes a makers leather flat case with "C. J. van JAARSVELDT/2nd K. A. R."on the lid and "C.J. VAN JAARSVELDT/BLANTYPE/NYASALAND" on the interior lid as well as 8 Eley Pegamoid cartridges with Westley's patent L.T. bullets, snap caps, and some cleaning tools. Length of pull 15 1/4 inches.
