STANLEY LEWIS (Canadian, 1930- 2006) "Detonation" 1972 - Limited edition woodcut on Japanese paper, 33/40. Signed and dated lower right, titled and editioned lower left. Unframed. 18.5 x 15 inches (image), 23.5 x 18 inches (paper). Excellent condition.

  • Notes: Stanley Lewis was born in Montreal, Quebec, in 1930. He studied at the Art School of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, with such instructors as Arthur Lismer and Jacques de Tonnacour. He then studied at the Instituto Allende (San Miguel, Mexico) and the Ein Hod Artist's Colony, in Israel. Despite gaining renown as a sculptor, Lewis continued to devote study to printmaking, including developing new techniques and technologies. He also explored historical art making methods, and collaborated with author Irving Stone on his novel The Agony and the Ecstasy, assisting the author by reproducing the tools and techniques that Michelangelo had used. Throughout his career Lewis taught at the Saidye Bronfman Centre School For Fine Arts, at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and McGill University. His work is found in many collections around the world, including the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa), Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Remai Modern (Saskatoon) and the Musee national des beaux-arts du Quebec. Stanley Lewis died in Montreal in 2006.

All packing and shipping is done at the expense of the purchaser. If you are the successful bidder on one or more lots, you will receive an email directly from the auction house within 48 hours. Please then contact us to discuss your packing, shipping and pick-up preferences (and we can remove artworks from framing in order to ship without frame and glass). All artworks are located in Regina, Saskatchewan and are available for pick-up. Also, we are currently offering free delivery in Regina on invoices over $200, and occasional delivery trips are made to Saskatoon to hand-deliver to Saskatoon home addresses for a small fee when there is sufficient demand. We can pack and ship throughout Canada and internationally, or can deliver your artworks to a recognized international shipper for them to pack and ship via their direct communications with you. For US buyers, note that all Canadian and US artworks have been proceeding as tariff exempt under the terms of the Canada-US-Mexico Free Trade Agreement, but the situation can change. Artworks with a country of origin other than Canada, US or Mexico are more likely to have a tariff fee added by US Customs.
