(UNION NAVY) USS UNADILLA COMMANDER JAMES STILLWELL SIGNED CARTE DE VISITE
Signed carte de visite photograph, 2.25 x 4 in. sepia, a seated view of U.S. Navy Lt. Commander JAMES STILLWELL, who commanded the wooden screw gunboat USS UNADILLA during operations on the St. John's River in Florida in the spring of 1864, taken at Matthew Brady's Washington, D.C. photographic studio. Stillwell signs on the verso in black ink, adding his rank ‘Lieut. U.S. Navy'. Another contemporary hand has added an ink identifying inscription, also on the verso, indicating that Stillwell served aboard the steam sloop USS PENSACOLA from 1861-62, and adding the date ‘[N]ov. 25 1861'. The CDV is trimmed at the edges, affecting the first letter of Stillwell's signature and part of the above date, else very good.
