[Franklin, Benjamin] Franklin, Benjamin. Manuscript Document, signed

Philadelphia, June 8, 1787. Manuscript land grant on vellum, signed by Benjamin Franklin as President of the Supreme Executive Council of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, for Edward Carrell for a tract of land called "Turkey Hill", situated along a branch of Wheeling Creek in Washington County, Pennsylvania; counter-signed at bottom by James Trimble for John Armstrong, Junior Secretary. Paper and wax seal in top left corner. Creasing from when folded; foxing and soiling; dampstaining in lower left, affecting some text. Approximately 13 1/4 x 15 1/2 in. (336 x 394 mm) (sight). Unexamined out of frame.

Boldly signed by Franklin in his role as President of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania (a role analogous to Governor of Pennsylvania), granting Edward Carrell (or Carroll) (abt. 1754-1824) land in Washington County, Pennsylvania. The Council was founded by the 1776 Constitution of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and began convening in Philadelphia on July 15, 1776, less than two weeks after the Declaration of Independence. Franklin was the sixth President (of seven), and it would prove to be one of his last public roles, as he would die two years after his term of service ended on November 5, 1788.
