101ST AIRBORNE 'RECEIPT' FOR LIBERATION OF BASTOGNE
A souvenir receipt, 11 x 8 in., Jan. 18, 1945, titled 'Memorandum Receipt VII Corps' and acknowledging the receipt of the town of Bastogne '...from the 101st Airborne Division the town of Bastogne, Luxembourg Province, Belgium. Condition: used but serviceable, kraut disinfected...'. With printed signature of Maj. Genl. Troy H. Middleton. On Jan. 17 and 18, 1945, the 101st Airborne Division were in the process of being relieved from their front line positions surrounding the town of Bastogne, Belgium, where they had been since Dec. 18, 1944. During the morning of Jan. 18, 1945, 500 representative troops from all of the Division's units assembled in the square of the battered town. Standing on a parachute-draped platform, the VIII Commander Gen. Troy Middleton presented Silver Star medals to men of the 502nd, 506th, and 327th regiments. The mayor of Bastogne then presented the town's flag to Gen. Maxwell Taylor. Gen. Middleton thanked the 101st for its bravery during the terrible campaign, but was interrupted by Taylor, who asked for a receipt of the return of Bastogne. A tongue-in-cheek printed memorandum receipt was handed to Middleton, which he then signed and period creation of which is offered here.
