Taino An unusual and rare egg-shaped object covered in snakes. Snakes have several symbolic meanings, including water and fertility. A fitting symbol for the egg. The surface was polished, and each snake figure was pecked with a hard stone to reveal the reptilian form. The snakes likely depict the colorful rainbow boa, who represented Boinayel, the god of water. Length: 8 inches diameter: 5.5 inches. The stone is fine-grained and quite heavy. Taino Culture c.600-1500AD. Dominican Republic. Provenance from John Fulling Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. Pre-Columbian dealer. To Larry Roberts collection, author of "Taino Sculptures, Art of the Gods," "Taino Hallucinogenic Implements Inhaling the Cosmic Dust," and the newly released "Taino Zemis and Other Heads of State, Rediscovering Caribbean Art." BS in Archaeology, University of Florida and BA, Art History University of Florida. Museum displays at the Orlando Museum of Art (2013-2014) and Santa Fe College (2024-Present) in Gainesville, Florida
