JOHN W. SIMPSON (ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA, 1827-1914) MAHOGANY OPEN WASHSTAND, the rectangular top with a shaped backsplash over a single full drawer with a bookmatched mahogany-veneered front, either end and other small surfaces also covered with a mahogany veneer, the whole raised on turned legs which also support a medial shelf with a shaped front edge. White/pitch pine secondary wood/substrate. Stenciled on the underside of the drawer "J. W. SIMPSON / CABINET - CHAIR / MAKER / [illegible] St / ALEX Va". Retains the original turned knobs, and an early, possibly original, finished surface. Mid 19th century. 31 1/4" HOA, 26" WOA, 15 3/4" DOA.
Catalogue Note: Born in 1827, John W. Simpson appears to be part of a larger family of cabinetmakers and joiners living in Alexandria. The 1850 census shows John and his two brothers, Peter and Henry, all recorded as cabinetmakers. By 1860 John's recorded as a house carpenter, and by 1900 he and his family have moved to Baltimore where he is then noted as "Builder". Eventually he moved to Campbell Co., VA and dies in Lynchburg in 1914.
John and his brothers are recorded in MESDA Craftsman Database (#98033, #98034, #98035). We were unable to locate any other signed pieces of furniture by the Simpsons.

  • Provenance:

From a Waterford, VA private collection.

  • Condition:
