Jules Chéret
1836-1932
Vin Mariani / Popular French Tonic Wine. 1894.

Condition A-: minor repaired tears at edges; minor creases and overpainting in image and text.

This is the version with the English text at the bottom, advertising this unique concoction - a coca wine and patent medicine devised in the 1860s by Angelo Mariani, a French chemist from the island of Corsica. The ethanol in the wine acted as a solvent and extracted the cocaine from the coca leaves, leading to claims by the company that the drink "Fortifies and Refreshes Body & Brain" and "Restores Health and Vitality." It was promoted as a performance enhancer for both creatives and athletes, and was endorsed by many notable people of its time, maybe most interestingly, Pope Leo XIII and later Pope Pius X.

Chéret 1116, Broido 865, Maindron 731, DFP-II 248, Maitres 77, Reims 540, Wine Spectator 3, Health Posters 111, Gold 42.
