Norris, Frank (1870-1902). The Octopus. A Story of California. New York: Doubleday, Page & Co., 1901.

8vo. Original dark red cloth gilt (very mild sunning to spine).

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. The Octopus was the first in a planned trilogy to be entitled The Epic of the Wheat. It is based on the Mussel Slough Tragedy of 1880, which saw ranchers engage in a bloody conflict with agents of the Southern Pacific Railroad. Norris's trilogy remains incomplete, as he died of appendicitis shortly before publication of the second part of his epic, entitled The Pit. BAL 15036.
