FINE SAILOR-MADE INLAID MAHOGANY TABLETOP DESK
America, Circa 1850
Extensive whale ivory, exotic wood and abalone inlay throughout, including "Thomas. D. Carr. 1850" at front, checkered and pique banding along the edges, and elaborate stars, pinwheels and hex symbols interspersed with simpler geometric shapes on the other faces. Slanted red baized writing surface hinges open. Interior with pen tray and open compartment. Dry old surface.

  • Provenance:
John Rinaldi Nautical Antiques, Kennebunkport, Maine.
The Collection of Nancy & Larry Dickson.

    Notes:
In Dictionary of Scrimshaw Artists by Stuart M. Frank (Mystic, Ct.: Mystic Seaport Museum, 1991), p. 26, Frank references this or another similar slant-lid desk that sold at Butterfield, April 22, 1989, Lot #237. Thomas D. Carr was born in 1811 in Tiverton, Rhode Island. He served as second mate aboard the New Bedford bark Milwood from 1842 to 1844 and the bark Hope from 1845 to 1850, and then as first mate on the Osceola from 1852 to 1854. The Vital Records of Westport, Massachusetts indicate he lived in the town and his wife was named Ruth.
  • Dimensions: Height 7.25". Width 20.25". Depth 19".
  • Condition: Lid molding loose on left side. Red baize probably a replacement, but shows wear. Unobtrusive lifting of some inlay. **This item contains animal and/or plant material and is not available for international delivery without CITES and other necessary permits, licenses, and certificates.
