Pair of Factory Game Scene Engraved "Cripple Stock" Henry Atkin Spring Opener" Sidelock Double Barrel Shotguns -A) Henry Atkin Shotgun Pair of Factory Game Scene Engraved "Cripple Stock" Henry Atkin Spring Opener" Sidelock Double Barrel Shotguns -A) Henry Atkin Shotgun This pair of fine "cripple stock" guns was completed c. 1968 according to Nigel Brown's "British Gunmakers Volume One: London" and would have been for a right handed gentleman to shoot strong hand with his left eye in line with the rib. Each gun in the pair is built with blacked steel chopperlump barrels featuring a single brass bead sight on the smooth concave game rib which is marked with a gold "1" or "2" in a flourish of scroll engraving at the base, "HENRY ATKIN LTD." and "7 BURY STREET, St. JAMES'S, LONDON, ENGLAND" on the right and left tubes respectively, import mark on left tube, and chambers marked 2 3/4 inches with ejectors. The barrels of each gun are fitted to a casehardened "spring opener" sidelock action, based on Purdey's Beesley patent, which is curved with the stock shape and displays attractive ornamental scroll engraving surrounding a gold "1" or "2" on the toplever, "HENRY ATKIN LTD" on both lockplates, and three game scenes in vignettes, all depicting partridge and pheasants. The guns feature bushed firing pins, intercepting sears, double triggers (front articulated), and a tang mounted automatic safeties with gold inlaid "SAFE". Each gun is fitted with a beautifully figured and multi-point flat-top checkered splinter forend with engraved brushed bright iron and Anson release with gold "1" or "2" as well as the right hand off-set "cripple stock" with teardrop carved drop points, "L.S.W." in the stock oval, and a checkered butt. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proofed and measured at .729 inches; choke constriction .008/.018 inches; minimum wall thickness .028/.027 inches; 1 9/16 inch drop at comb; 2 13/16 inch drop at heel; 15 1/8 inch length of pull; weight 6 lbs. 10 oz.

  • Condition: A) Very good overall, retaining 95% original black finish, strong remnants of the original case colors in the protected areas with the balance a fine silvered patina, some light handling evidence, some light oxidation mainly at the muzzle, a hairline split at the upper tang, a few light dings and scratches on the wood, and overall crisp checkering on the wood. Mechanically excellent. B) Very fine overall, retaining 98% original black finish on the barrels, strong remnants of original case colors in the protected areas with the balance a fine silver patina, some loss of black on the small parts, light handling evidence, a small hairline split at the upper tang, and crisp overall checkering on the wood. Mechanically excellent.
