An authentic early 20th-century Columbia Family Scale manufactured by the renowned American firm Landers, Frary & Clark of New Britain, Connecticut. Constructed of cast iron with its original black japanned finish, the scale features a large circular enamel dial marked "Columbia Family Scale," calibrated to 24 pounds by ounces, beneath a substantial rectangular cast iron weighing platform. The dial retains its original printed face identifying the maker, "Landers, Frary & Clark, New Britain, Conn.," along with the patent date of April 16, 1907 and the notation "Not legal for use in trade," indicating its intended use as a household kitchen scale rather than for commercial transactions. Founded in the mid-19th century, Landers, Frary & Clark became one of America's premier manufacturers of household goods, producing an extensive range of kitchen equipment, scales, cutlery, and appliances. Their Columbia line of family scales was prized for its robust construction, mechanical reliability, and handsome industrial design, making these scales staples of American kitchens throughout the first half of the 20th century. Displaying an appealing untouched surface with honest age and wear, this example retains its original cast platform, decorative molded base, brass dial bezel, and mechanical movement. It serves equally well as a collectible piece of American industrial history or as an attractive farmhouse, country store, or kitchen display object.

  • Literature: Landers, Frary & Clark (1842–1965) was among America's most influential manufacturers of household implements and kitchen equipment. Their Columbia Family Scales, introduced during the early 20th century, became fixtures in American homes, prized for their durable cast iron construction and dependable spring mechanisms. Surviving examples with original dial faces and finishes remain highly collectible within the fields of kitchen antiques, country store memorabilia, and industrial design.
  • Circa: Circa 1907–1925.
  • Condition: Good antique condition with an untouched, original surface. Exhibits age-appropriate paint loss, oxidation, scattered rust, surface dirt, and wear throughout consistent with decades of use. Dial shows light discoloration and staining. The pointer rests near zero; however, the scale has not been tested or calibrated for accuracy and is offered as a decorative collectible. No major structural damage observed from the provided photographs.
