Veraguas, Panama bordering with Colombia, ca. 1200 - 1500 CE. This cast copper and gold alloy pendant was purportedly found in Panama, along the Panamanian border with Colombia, but was influenced by the Darien aesthetic, which spread from eastern Colombia to Honduras. These stylized anthropomorphic figures, representing shamans or priests in hybrid form, feature thin arms and simple faces, with birds representing celestial wanderings. A large sheet gold dangler is suspended from the back of each head. Two integral suspension loops below the heads and a gold hook on the lower backs. A rare type. XRF analysis: Gold: 9.6 K. Gold: 40.25% Silver: 10.13% Copper: 49.26% Iron: 0.18%. Size: 3”L x 2.63”W (7.6 x 6.7cm), 62.8 gr.

Provenance: Ex. Jan Mitchell collection by descent to his son Oliver, collected prior to 1970’s. XRF tested with report available.
